Charles Joseph Hares was born in Marcellus, NY (b. 1881), earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees from Syracuse University followed by a fellowship in Geology at the University of Chicago. He was employed by the United States Geological Survey (1910-1917) and engaged in field surveys for coal and oil in the West. In 1917, he joined the Ohio Oil Company and became the first full time geologist. He retired from the Ohio Oil Company in 1946. He was the author of a number of ge...
